This past Sunday we started a new series in our Sunday Morning program called “Does God Exist?” It’s put out by Focus On The Family and TrueU. It’s a deep series that will prove that God exists by using science. It will prepare you to have an answer for the reason you believe. Even if you don’t understand everything, keep coming and listening. It’s good to be exposed to this information. Here are my notes from the first lesson.
Faith & Reason
Faith means “Uncertain”. Usually the reason for believing in something. Even scientists have faith. Faith is a belief in presupposition. Faith is a trust or belief in God’s power and/or presence. Faith is belief in a system or thought of a worldview.
Now, what’s a worldview? It’s the lens we view the world through. It’s a personal philosophy, a set of answers about reality.
What are some basic worldviews?
- Theism – religious view believing that God is personal and can be known.
- Materialist/Naturalist – a view believing that there is no God and that all that matters is matter, physical stuff.
- Pantheism – a view that God is not personal and that he is in all. This is an Eastern view.
- Deism – God made everything but stepped out of the creation. He is not personal and can’t be known
Different Types of Reason
- Deduction Reasoning – a general rule that applies to everything
- Induction Reasoning – a general rule that applies from an observation
- Abduction Reasoning – You trace the effects back to a possible cause
- Multiple Competing Hypothesis – reasoning using multiple causes to trace back to an effect and taking the best from there.
Notice that with all types of reasoning, there is no one that points to it being 100% correct and right.
