Cleaning up our mouth

We live in a society that tells us that the way we look determines everything. If people are to like us, we need to look good. This series we are starting “Image Is Everything” is about how to look good to God and how we should start looking at other people through the eyes of God.

Before reading on, read James 3:2-10.

What comes out of your mouth, typically?

I’m not sure if this has happened to you, but when you said something bad maybe your mom or dad stuck a bar of soap in your mouth as punishment. Well, we are going to look at how we clean up our mouth with the same idea using the acronym SOAP.
Sslow down: we tend to jump to conclusions too quickly without hearing the real story.
Oopen your bible: when we put good things in our minds, good things will be coming out of our mouths.
Aask for help: talk to a trusted friend who can hold you accountable.
Ppray about it: God will help you if you ask in the name of Jesus.

Here was our small group discussion questions:
What’s been the worst thing that has ever been said to you or about you? What’s been the best thing that’s ever been said to you or about you? What’s been the worst thing that you have ever said about somebody? What’s been the best thing that you have ever said about somebody? What types of words typically come out of your mouth? (put downs, gossip, teasing, truth, etc) Talk about how you as a small group can use SOAP to clean up your mouths. (memorize a passage, pray for each other, hold each other accountable, etc.)
